In 1998 the trees in Copenhagen’s historic square Kongens Nytorv were felled due to Dutch elm disease. 24 years later they give new life to an apartment in the city’s Nørrebro district, reflecting the owner’s fondness for art and beautiful craftsmanship.

The interior design is the result of an involved and inspiring collaboration with the owner, a collaboration characterized by great artistic freedom and the owner’s love of high-quality workmanship. Therefore, joinery and metalwork of the highest quality have been prioritized. The apartment is located in a building dating back to 1891 and the project includes a new custom-designed kitchen and bathroom including all fittings as well as the color scheme for all rooms.

Wall colors are inspired by Swedish artist Mamma Anderssons work ‘Swan Pond’ (2016). Dusty tones of light blue, light yellow, and green are set off by deeper contrasts of dark brown and red. In the kitchen, the old elm trees from Kongens Nytorv Square have been given new life in close collaboration with skilled cabinet makers from Rammelisten. On cupboards and shelving and the 3.20 m (11 ft) high door leading into the pantry, the tree’s growth rings are allowed to fully reveal themselves.

Cupboard storage has been optimized with an organic design that also off-sets the owner’s fine collection of furniture and art objects.
